SUARAM Malaysia forms international chapter to fight for Malaysian human rights and advance international lobby initiatives
SUARAM Malaysia is pleased to announce the establishment of its new international advocacy wing, SUARAM International. The formal creation of a London-based chapter is an exciting turning point, allowing SUARAM to exert greater publicity and scrutiny of Malaysia’s democratic and human rights processes on an international level.
Formal operations began this week in the London office. SUARAM International-UK will actively lobby British and European parliaments, and the United Nations Human Rights Council, to hold the Malaysian government accountable for its deteriorating human rights records.
It will collaborate with civil society groups such as Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, MyOverseasVote (an organisation fighting to restore the voting rights of overseas Malaysians), Sarawak Report and the Solicitors International Human Rights Group on international lobbying initiatives and public outreach projects. In Geneva, SUARAM International-UK will also work closely with its partners, the Bruno Manser Fund and Forum Asia.
Spring and summer public event programmes have been scheduled, including public lectures, panel discussions and a film festival related to Malaysian human rights issues.
Solidarity protests that coincide with Malaysian demonstrations will also form part of SUARAM’s campaign agenda. Last year’s much-lauded Bersih rally saw hundreds of enthusiastic supporters take to the London streets in defense of free and fair elections. Approximately 65, 000 Malaysian-born individuals reside in the United Kingdom, making the Malaysian community one of the liveliest and strongest diaspora groups.
This year, Bersih 3.0 will take place on Saturday 28 April outside the Malaysian High Commission, Belgravia (London, UK) at11.30am.
