PRESS STATEMENT: 10 MAY 2012
DROP HANIF OMAR AS HEAD OF INDEPENDENT PANEL
SUARAM welcomes the idea of forming an independent panel to probe police brutality during the Bersih 3.0 rally. But we oppose the appointment of former Inspector General of Police Hanif Omar as the head of the panel. With the statements made by Hanif below, SUARAM has no confident in this panel.
- 1 May 2012- Alleged he identified alleged pro-communist individuals at Bersih 3.0 from demonstrations in the 1970’s.
- 1 May 2012- Tactics of using provocateurs and children in Bersih 3.0 rally were tactics of the communist.
- 6 May 2012- Supports the claim of Prime Minister Najib Razak that Bersih 3.0 was a coup.
These allegations by Hanif is highly prejudicial and bias to the probe. Hanif, the police chief (as he then was) had arrested hundred over people under the ISA during 1987 Operasi Lalang. SUARAM objects to the appointment of Hanif who had not shown any regard to human rights during his tenure.
If the government is sincere on forming an independent panel, Hanif has to be DROPPED from the panel. SUARAM demands that representatives from SUHAKAM and Malaysian Bar Council be made part of the independent panel.
SUARAM once again calls for the government to revive the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC). It is high time for the government to make a stand in reforming its police force by addressing issues pertaining to human rights abuses.
