RELEASE FREE RADIO SARAWAK DJ – PETER JOHN JABAN NOW!

IMMEDIATE RELEASE
URGENT APPEAL: 31 MAY 2012
RELEASE FREE RADIO SARAWAK DJ – PETER JOHN JABAN NOW!

Peter John Jaban, presenter for Radio Sarawak DJ has been detained this morning at Kota Kinabalu Airport prior to his flight to Miri. The authorities have yet to give reasons for his arrest. Jaban was detained, photographed and had his documents photocopied, before escorted onto the flight.

Peter who has been on a holiday was planning to return to see his family in Sarawak in order to celebrate the traditional Dayak harvest festival, Gawai. He has been very careful of returning to Malaysia, because of threats against the radio station made by certain official figures.

SUARAM strongly condemns the government for the on-goings attacks and intimidation on freedom of expression and movement, a fundamental right which is guaranteed under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Federal Constitution of Malaysia. We demand the Malaysian government to stop all the intimidation, and to release Peter John Jaban immediately.

We urge you to write a letter to the relevant authorities of Malaysia to voice your concerns over the arrest of Peter John Jaban and demand for his immediate release.
