STAND UP FOR SUARAM NIGHT: A FUNDRAISING DINNER For the past six months, Suara Rakyat Malaysia, SUARAM (Suara Inisiatif Sdn Bhd) have been facing probes and harassment from various government agencies for doing the work that we do. Here’s your chance to get updates on the latest development about SUARAM! Join us for a night of fun and laughter at our fundraising dinner to know exactly what we are going through as well as some light entertainment and performances by local artists. The purpose of this fundraising event is to raise funds to cover our daily operating costs and to promote and protect human rights and civil liberties through human rights education, campaigns and participatory activities in 2013/2014. The estimated cost for the first half of 2013 alone is projected at RM600,000.00. Do join us! WE need YOUR support! 1) You just had a fundraising dinner recently, why are you doing another one so soon?

Yes, it’s true that we recently held an Ops Scorpene Fundraising Dinner in June 2012. As we have assured the attendees and supporters of said event, the funds raised will be strictly use to cover the campaign and legal cost for the Ops Scorpene campaign.

This upcoming event we are organising in January is meant to keep SUARAM and our human rights campaigns and programmes continuously running throughout 2013/2014.

2) In what aspects will the funds raised be used by SUARAM?

In addition to covering our overhead costs and employ our staff, the funds will be used for the different desks and campaigns by SUARAM in the Klang Valley and Penang. This also includes trainings and production of education materials such as books, flyers and videos to suit the different campaigns we do. Funds will also be used to cover other expenses such as maintenance and upgrading our computers and other equipments, stationary and communication bills.

3) How many desks or units do you have?

Our campaigns and programmes is focus, but not limited to:
Documentation & Monitoring – Monitoring, documenting and research on the state of human rights in Malaysia;
Right to Trial – Abolition of all detention-without-trial laws;
Right to Justice – Campaign on accountability of police and other enforcement agencies;
Refugees Desk – Campaign to protect and promote the rights of asylum seekers, refugees, migrant workers and persons of concern;
Outreach & Event – Organising educational programmes such as human rights trainings and events, film screenings and workshops.

4) How will I know how the funds raised will be used?
As a human rights organisation, we are committed to remain transparent in our accounting purposes. We submit our accounts to be audited annually without fail since we are registered under the Companies Act, 1965 since 2001. In order to keep the public inform, we will encourage donors and supporters to subscribe to our mailing list this whereby we will give a monthly or bi-monthly update on the different activities and programmes that we do. You may also visit our website from time to time to get updates on what is going on.
