SUARAM: Blocking the Sarawak Report website is unacceptable and unconstitutional

The Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek’s justification for blocking the Sarawak Report website is lame and unjustifiable.
Article 10 of the Federal Constitution guarantees Freedom of Expression (FOE). Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM) condemns this action by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to block the Sarawak Report website. When MCMC claimed that information on Sarawak Report was unverified information, it should show which of this information is problematic and not censor the whole website like they do in banana republics.
SUARAM calls on MCMC to lift the blocking immediately without any conditions. This latest clampdown on Sarawak Report is clearly a desperate move by MCMC to silence critics on Social Media when it should be promoting FOE, FOI and transparency. MCMC is wasting its resources to create fear and suppress information and opinion regarding the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.
This latest action by MCMC is totally against its own mission statement which is “providing transparent regulatory processes to facilitate fair competition and efficiency in the industry”. If MCMC upholds truth and transparency, it should seek verification and clarification from The Sarawak Report and pro-actively engage with them to seek and promote the truth. They should then make the findings public rather jumping the gun to block their website.
SUARAM urges the authorities to act responsibly by investigating without fear and favor the 1MDB controversy and to make the findings public. SUARAM reiterates the call for the authorities to cease the intimidation and to uphold our right to freedom of expression as guaranteed under Article 10.1 of the Federal Constitution.

Cease the blocking of the Sarawak Report website now!
