Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM) condemns the widespread investigation and harassment against human rights defenders in the recent weeks and call for the immediate cessation of all unwarranted and absurd investigation against human rights defenders and political activists.
Since the entry into Recovery MCO, several human rights activists and political opponents have been subjected to investigation and harassment under a myriad of laws. There is no justification for any of the investigations and these investigations are nothing more than an attempt to silence voices criticizing or disagreeing with the Perikatan Nasional regime.
Such targeted investigation and harassment fits in line with the modus operandi of the Barisan Nasional regime prior to the 14th General Election and cannot be tolerated. Malaysia has stepped beyond such form of politics and we must not return to an era where individuals are not allowed to express their view safely in line with the rights provided for by the Federal Constitution.
Youth who are merely participating in an online mock Parliament were also not spared from such harassment with reports of investigation and ‘invitation to discuss’ coming from participants of Parlimen Digital that took place over the weekend. The claim by the Inspector-General of Police that he was unaware of such investigation is worrying as it would imply that errant officers are acting outside of the law or that the Inspector-General of Police is unable to ascertain the activities of the police force.
SUARAM calls for an end to investigation and harassment by the Royal Malaysian Police and will be raising the concerns of abuse of power to the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) and the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC).
