Open Position: Right to Trial Coordinator

Overview

The coordinator will be responsible for implementing and monitoring SUARAM’s advocacy and other activities on the right to fair trial and unlawful detention. This would include working on individual cases where the right to fair trial was violated, or an unlawful detention took place. The coordinator is also expected to engage with government stakeholders, civil society, lawyers and victim of human rights violations.

Job Description

  1. To provide paralegal support and assistance to victims of human rights violations in the area of the right to fair trial or unlawful detention
  2. To design and plan SUARAM engagement and outreach programmes on the right to fair trial
  3. To coordinate SUARAM’s engagement with victim & victim families
  4. To assist and represent SUARAM’s engagement with broader civil societies in Malaysia on the issue of the right to fair trial
  5. To monitor and document the violation of the right to fair trial and unlawful detention in Malaysia

Requirements

  • 3 years’ experience in human rights advocacy, law & policy, governance, political science, and/or social science relevant to SUARAM’s primary area of advocacy;
  • Able to work independently and manage project in a timely and organized manner;
  • Experience, training or background in para-legal or case management
  • Experience, training or certification in para-counselling or working with vulnerable individuals;
  • Fluent in Bahasa Malaysia and English with any other spoken and written language being a bonus;

Overview

The coordinator will be responsible for implementing and monitoring SUARAM’s advocacy and other activities on business and human rights issues. This may include engagement with government stakeholders, civil society, corporate entities and community groups on human rights violations or community issues related to business and human rights.

Job Description

  1. To design and plan SUARAM engagement and outreach programmes on business and human rights
  2. To coordinate SUARAM’s engagement with community and grassroot groups on business and human rights issues
  3. To assist and represent SUARAM’s engagement with broader civil societies in Malaysia on business and human rights

Requirements

  • 3 years’ experience in human rights advocacy, community organizing, law & policy, developmental science, governance, political science, and/or social science relevant to SUARAM’s primary area of advocacy;
  • Able to work independently and manage project in a timely and organized manner;
  • Able to travel across Malaysia, preferably with own mode of transportation
  • Experience in engaging government agencies and facilitating multistakeholder meeting;
  • Fluent in Bahasa Malaysia and English with any other spoken and written language being a bonus;
