IPCMC is necessary to investigate cases of police misconduct to help restore the public’s belief in PDRM

Today, SUARA Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM) will reiterate the importance and the need for the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) bill as it provides an independent body that will help investigate cases of police misconduct at every level, especially controversial cases involving senior members of the Royal Malaysian Police that have traditionally not received a lot of attention.

We believe that IPCMC will help restore the public’s trust in the National Police Institution, which has been on the decline in recent years due to abuses of power on a large scale.

The lack of trust can be observed in the case of illegal premises in Sungai Buloh that occurred last week. The police statement issued by IPD Sungai Buloh received a ton of backlash and negative comments on Facebook, which reflects the public’s distrust in the police department.

If IPCMC is implemented , it will allow for thorough investigations on past cases to be carried out against any member of PDRM, especially senior officers. The purpose of this is to investigate the cases that have caused a great level of concern among the community, to help them get justice whilst restoring the image of the Royal Malaysian Police.

Indirectly, the bill will have a significant impact on reducing crime rates, particularly the level of white-collar crime in the country. It will guarantee a police institution that is clean and accountable, which will, in turn, increase the public’s trust in PDRM.
