Our new Minister of Defence Mohamed Sabu recently dropped a bombshell (well, not literally) when he revealed that only four out of the 28 Russian fighter jets owned by the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) are air-worthy. He said that the RMAF had 18 Russian-made Sukhoi Su-30MKM and 10 MiG-29 jetfighters and that the remaining 14 Sukhois are under repair. He further said the RMAF was unable to properly maintain the airworthiness of these fighter jets.

Congratulations to our cook at Kamunting Detention Camp during Ops Lalang, Mat Sabu for being appointed our new Defence Minister. He has been quoted as saying that his first task as Defence Minister is to investigate an alleged military land privatisation deal made to a company owned by three individuals. All well and good, but surely this is but one small part of the overall big defence picture that needs reviewing.

VOTERS SHOULD MAKE FIGHTER JETS PURCHASE AN ELECTION ISSUE

BAE Systems’ offer to provide Malaysia a UK government-backed financing deal if it decides to replace its fleet of combat jets with the Eurofighter Typhoon should alert Malaysian voters to make this multi-billion ringgit purchase an election issue.

Malaysia has been weighing France’s Rafale jet and the Eurofighter Typhoon, built by a European consortium including Britain’s BAE, as it looks to buy up to 18 jets to replace its Russian MiG-29s,  most of which are grounded.
