Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve (KLNFR) De-gazettement Inconsistent with Malaysia’s International Environmental and Human Rights Obligations

We, representatives from various civil-society organisations, are writing to raise serious concerns related to the proposed development and de-gazettement of the Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve (KLFNR). Our organisations are extremely disappointed with the Selangor State government for the manner in which they handled the Town Hall Meeting that took place on the 29th of September 2020 in Pulau Carey to discuss this issue.

Prosecution of Cheras Hartamas Activists Unjustifiable and Illogical!

Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM) is gravely concerned with the prosecution of 5 individuals under Section 186 of the Penal Code for their activism against the construction of high voltage pylon at Cheras Hartamas.

The initial arrest of the 5 individuals in 9th August 2016 was unwarranted as none of the 5 individuals were in any way obstructing the work of public officials. Recounting the fact that these individuals offered their full cooperation with the police and other agencies that may have been involved, it is regrettable that they are now prosecuted under Section 186 for alleged obstruction of public official.

Furthermore, without any offence committed by these individuals, how did the ‘public officials’ in question justify that they were obstructed in discharging their duties? What is the ‘duty’ in question and how were they obstructed when the ‘duty’ does not exist? As such, the charge which suggest that they obstructed a public official’s duty can only be described as frivolous and illogical.

Despite the curious circumstances surrounding their prosecution, they were required to post bail of RM3,000 per person.

SUARAM calls for the charges against these individuals to be dropped immediately as there are no merits to the case. Furthermore, SUARAM calls on the Selangor State Government to explore all avenues of redress available for the community affected by the construction of high voltage pylons around the residential area of Cheras Hartamas.

Arrests of Taman Cheras Hartamas Residents

For Immediate Release
9th August 2016

Arrests of Taman Cheras Hartamas Residents

Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM) condemns the arrest of residents who tried to halt the construction of high voltage pylons surrounding their residential areas.

Tenaga National Berhad (TNB) disregarded the welfare of the local population when they failed to conduct proper consultation and discussion with local residents on the construction of high voltage pylons in close proximity with residential houses. With no clear studies conducted on the long term health impact of high voltage pylons in such proxmity and lack of initiative in exploring alternative made it necessary for residents to peacefully protest and halt the project pending government intervention.

With the absence of any visible alternative, residents of Taman Cheras Hartamas had united to stand against the project and took measures to stop the project pending possible state intervention and court injunction. Despite the peaceful nature of the measures adopted, 5 residents and the Executive Director of SUARAM were arrested on the morning of 9th August 2016.

SUARAM demand for the police to immediate release all those detained and for TNB to immediately halt the project and conduct proper dialogues with the residents on the matter. SUARAM also call on the state government of Selangor to intervene on the matter and ensure that the welfare of the people is taken care of!

Residents arrested includes:

  1. Lam Guan Loong
  2. Yim Ah Ming
  3. Yap Ah Tai
  4. Long Chef Chew
  5. Tan Teck Chye
