06 donation appeal GHAH-01

Over the past month, the Sedition Act has been indiscriminately used in a new wave of political repression and terror whose targets have included elected representatives, lawyers, academics, and activists.

On 5 September 2014, NGOs responded by forming the Abolish the Sedition Act Movement, or Gerakan Hapus Akta Hasutan (GHAH). A joint statement by GHAH was endorsed by 128 concerned organizations.

GHAH appeals urgently for donation from the public. The funds are needed for:

1. LEGAL AID – for urgent post bail and legal support to those who are charged under the Sedition Act. Bail amount could be up to RM5,000 per case.
(Note: Returned bail will be used to cover other legal expenses incurred during the case and public campaigning)

2. PUBLIC CAMPAIGNING – for launch of GHAH, nationwide roadshows, printing of publicity materials, and other events to call for the abolition of the Sedition Act.

GHAH urges concerned Malaysians to contribute RM50, RM100 or any other amount to support those who have been unjustly charged under the Sedition Act.

Suaram launches online book store

Suaram is pleased to announce that its publications are now available for purchase online via:

As a human rights NGO, Suaram has contributed to the research and publication on various public policies and issues – such as arms spending, energy policies, May 13 riots, violence in Kampung Medan, the ISA and Operation Lalang, development projects and their impacts on community, and police reform.

Two of Suaram’s best-selling publications are:

1. The Annual Human Rights Report on Malaysia – Published annually without fail since 1989, the report documents the violations and progress of human rights in Malaysia during the year in review. The report is both detailed and non-partisan and keenly awaited every year by local as well as foreign human rights watchers.

2. May 13 – Declassified Documents on the Malaysian Riots of 1969 – written by Dr Kua Kia Soong using documents declassified at the London Public Records Office, this publication deliberates that the May 13 riots were by no means a spontaneous outburst of ethnic violence but rather an orchestrated coup d’etat by the ascendant state capitalist class against the Tunku-led aristocracy.

In launching the online book store, Suaram believes that its human rights publications will reach out to a wider audience.

Members of public are encouraged to support Suaram by purchasing its publications. Sales proceeds from the publications will be used to fund Suaram’s non-profit work on human rights.

Suaram also welcomes financial donation in support of its work.
