ONLY ELECTED LOCAL COUNCILS CAN PREVENT ENVIRONMENTAL SCANDALS

Press statement by Kua Kia Soong, SUARAM Adviser 29 June 2019

The Malaysian people have become totally fed-up with the performance of their local authorities all these years. Our daily newspapers abound with complaints about the many aspects of local councils’ irresponsibility and questionable activities. The inertia and non-accountability of local councils have resulted in bottlenecks, discontentment and environmental disasters which are holding back our development. Looking at examples of successful councils in the developed countries, we find that their most distinguishing features are the fact that they are elected; council meetings are open and transparent; accountability is demanded; there is participation by ratepayers, and there are established mechanisms to manage change.

BRAVO! OUR HOME-GROWN KL CITY OPERA

By Kua Kia Soong, SUARAM Adviser 28 June 2019

Way back in August 1984 after we had gone to watch the New York Metropolitan Opera perform ‘La Traviata’ in Kuala Lumpur, I wrote:

CREDIBILITY OF THE HOME MINISTER AT STAKE

Press statement by Kua Kia Soong, SUARAM Adviser 27 June 2019

TIME FOR KAK WAN MOVE-OVER FOR ANWAR

Press statement by Kua Kia Soong, SUARAM Adviser 16 June 2019

Given the way Dr Mahathir is playing games over the exact moment when Anwar is to take over the Prime Ministership, I would call upon Kak Wan to make a strategic chess move by resigning her post of Deputy PM as soon as possible since she has already said she would do so if her husband becomes PM and she does not condone nepotism in her party.
